About Crappie Attitude about Cancer
After losing a couple of very close friends and fishing buddies to cancer, also helping his wife battle with breast cancer. Big Al had an Idea of a way to raise money for fighting cancer in honor of his fishing buddies and his wife. Going to his youngest daughter and explaining the idea of running a crappie tournament and designing a t-shirt with the slogan
“I have a Crappie Attitude about Cancer so I’m Catchin’ Crappies to Cure Cancer”. So his daughter Evie took her fathers idea and designed a print for a t-shirt and a flier. So in 2012 the 3rd Saturday in May was picked for the first Annual Crappie Attitude about Cancer Crappie Tournament in Lake Cadillac and Mitchell . The first year the weather was beautiful, sunny and very warm. Most of the 50 people registered got sunburned. The next year the weather was cold, wet and snowing by the end of the 2nd Annual Crappie Tournament. With each year there is a new t-shirt color picked and each year there are more and more people registering for the tournament. The idea of a Crappie Attitude about Cancer first started as a fundraiser for the DEQ and DNR, where Big Al worked, for their counties Relay for Life. Through the years Al retired but he and his family continue to put on the tournament and sell t-shirts to raise money for Relay for Life. With all the money from registrations and t-shirt sales Big Al and his family have raised thousands of dollars to help in fighting cancer. It may not be alot, but it all helps. This just took a man who loves others and fishing and combined that to help in the fight against Crappie Cancer.
